OTHERING #3

How do we other on the daily? By deciding anything about our lives, our time, our needs is more important than anyone else's. We decide that our humanity is more "real," that our experience is the only one that matters. We do this all day, every time someone takes a long time at the cashier in front of us, or is going straight on a red light, when we could turn right. We make strangers "others," less real then we are. What we don't realize is that this is cutting us off from our humanity, from our own heart.

OTHERING #2

We "other" our emotions, and parts of ourselves all the time, without even knowing it. We ALL have feelings, coping strategies, and needs that have gone unmet or unseen. There have been times in our lives when who we are and how we've expressed ourselves have been rejected by the people around us. Or they've been so painful or shameful that we have buried them deep inside of us, we have rejected these parts of ourselves. This is not unusual, this is not unique- this is what we do. It's ok. Deep breath. Slower. Again.
